:: A brief history of the Maypole Brewery ::
|
Brewery was set up in 1995 by former colliery
manager Danny Losinski, who purchased the 2.5 barrel
plant from Alan Gill who had used it to start the
Springhead Brewery back in 1990. The brewing equipment
was installed in a converted 18th century farm building
at North Laithes.
Danny brewed for nearly seven years and produced a range
of excellent ales, perhaps the most notable was Mae West
at 4.6% and still being brewed today. In November 2001
Danny decided to retire from brewing and concentrate his
efforts on monitoring ‘quality control’!
The brewery was bought by Ken and Fran Munro who, at the
time, also ran the very successful Square & Compass
Inn at Normanton on Trent. A brewer was needed and they
asked one of the founder members of Newark CAMRA, Rob
Neil, if he would be interested in learning the art of
brewing. Rob was in between jobs at the time and
didn't need asking twice! It was like putting a kid in
charge of a sweet shop! |

Rob trained with Danny for
a few weeks and then on January 3rd 2002 he
brewed his first solo brew - Celebration. It
was a success. During the next three years, Rob
increased the portfolio of beers with some new
brews of his own including Normanton I.P.A.,
Ghost Train, Mach2, Mad Mild and a re-vamped
version of Mayfair which won Silver in its
category at the national
S.I.B.A. awards in
2004.
Production went from strength to strength and it
was soon decided a larger plant would be
required to cope with demand. After a lot of
searching a 10 barrel brewery was located in
Ireland and shipped over to England where it was
installed at a new site at Cromwell, this became
Milestone Brewing Co. and production started in
December 2004. By this time Maypole Brewery had
ceased production and some Maypole brands were
now being brewed at Milestone. |
